
Disabled Students Commission Podcast

We are pleased to announce the release of our first Podcast, on the topic ‘Disabled Students Commission’ featuring an interview with John Rushforth in discussion with Geoff Layer.
Geoff Layer has extensive knowledge and experience in the sector, he has worked for over 40 years in post compulsory education and led the Disabled Student Sector Leadership Group from 2015 until 2018. In 2019 the Universities Minister appointed him as Chair of the newly formed Disabled Student Commission to promote the interests of disabled students. In 2021 the Minister for Disabilities appointed him as the Disability Ambassador for Universities. He was also a board member of AdvanceHE, Chair of the HE sector’s EDI Committee and Chair of the SLC Stakeholder Forum until Easter 2022. He recently retired as Vice Chancellor of the University of Wolverhampton and is currently working on strategic development for Coventry University.
The fascinating Podcast conversation with John Rushforth gives an overview of what the Disabled Students Commission is, who is involved and how it operates. There is also an interesting discussion on some of the current issues affecting disabled students and Geoff also chats about the role of governing body and shares his thoughts on the future.
